How to use hearts and chat on Periscope

What are hearts?

Hearts are a way for you to share your support and enthusiasm with a broadcaster and fellow viewers. If you like what you're seeing, you can tap the screen to give the broadcaster a heart on iOS or Android.

On web, you can give hearts once you are logged in by clicking on the heart icon in the bottom right corner of your screen.

Only hearts given in public broadcasts and replays will be counted toward your overall heart count. While we don't have strict limitations on giving hearts, we do have mechanisms in place to make sure the system isn't abused.

If someone takes a screenshot while you're broadcasting, a camera icon will appear on the screen alongside the hearts.

What are Super Hearts and how do I give them?

Super Hearts provide viewers with a unique way to support their favorite broadcasters. They can be purchased with coins bought in the App Store or Google Play Store. When you give a broadcaster a Super Heart they accrue a star balance. Through our Super Broadcaster Program, select broadcasters can redeem their star balance for cash. Note: you can send and receive Super Hearts even if you're not currently eligible for the Super Broadcaster Program.

How to give Super Hearts

  1. Enter a live broadcast in which the broadcaster accepts Super Hearts.
  2. Tap on the Super Hearts icon next to the chat field.
  3. If you haven’t purchased coins, tap Get Coins.
  4. Once you’ve purchased a coin package, tap Back to Hearts to select which type of Super Heart you’d like to give. Please note that your coin value (shown next to your profile photo) must match or exceed the coin value of the Super Heart you choose.
  5. Tap Done (iOS) or the  (Android) to go back to the broadcast.
  6. Tap the screen to give Super Hearts.

The Super Hearts icon will show the type of Super Heart you’ve selected and how many of that type you’re able to send.

If you’re watching a broadcast in the X app or on pscp.tv, you’ll be able to see Super Hearts but you will not be able to purchase or give them to the broadcaster.

What is chat and how do I use it?

Chat allows you to comment on live broadcasts. It’s an essential part of the Periscope

experience because it’s a way for viewers and broadcasters to engage with one another.

To chat, tap on the Say something... prompt on the bottom of the screen, then type your comment and tap the arrow button to send it.

To reply to another viewer’s comment in a live broadcast, tap on their comment, select Reply, type your reply, and tap the arrow button to send it.

While watching a live or replay broadcast on iOS and Android, you can scroll back to read and engage with earlier comments that have disappeared from view. To scroll back to earlier comments, tap over comments and swipe down.

If you encounter abusive comments during a broadcast, you can report them using comment moderation.

What is limited chat?

When going live, you have the ability to allow everyone in the broadcast to comment or limit comments to people who you follow. This setting can be turned on or off before each broadcast. To enable this feature, tap the chat icon on the broadcast screen.
